What Birds Spend the Winter in CT?

Chickadee

White-breasted Nuthatch

Cardinal

Downy Woodpecker

Although some birds migrate south from Connecticut for the winter, others actually migrate south to Connecticut!  Birds such as Juncos and White-throated Sparrows nest further north, then come here to spend the winter (go figure)!

Some of the most common birds to come to your feeders in the winter are Cardinals, Blue Jays, Chickadees, Titmice, Juncos, White-throated Sparrows, Mourning Doves, House Finch, Goldfinch, Downy Woodpeckers (actually just about all the woodpeckers spend the winter here).

Some birds look different in winter and identifying them can be a challenge.  The new Sibley book called "Sibley's Birding Basics" is geared toward just that - learning what is most important when it comes to identifying birds.  It is not just for beginners although beginners will definitely benefit from the book.
